Putting lives back on track

When Maths and Geography teacher Mr Tom Rose volunteered at the Centre one Christmas, he was very moved by the experience.  It inspired him to talk to his school, Dulwich Prep, about the possibility of choosing the Centre as their Advent charity.  At assembly one morning, Mr Rose spoke about his Christmas volunteering to launch their fundraiser: Make your own Christmas jumper, dress up for £1 day’.  Dulwich Prep went on to raise £491 for the Centre.  Thank you Dulwich Prep!
Dulwich Prep 1But the boys wanted to do even more.  Ten pupils volunteered to help out at the Centre before Christmas.  Together with teachers Mr Rose and Mr Gough (who also drove the mini bus), the Dulwich Prep team wrapped Christmas presents and played with children in the family centre.  They were incredibly kind and it was a joy having them here – for our clients, staff and the other volunteers who were here that day.  They helped out with our English language classes, to the point that one of the teachers said that she was able to enjoy a well-earned break!  They also donated clothes and toys to our charity shop.

This is from one of the volunteers:

On 7th December 2012, Mr Rose and Mr Gough took ten pupils to the Cardinal Hume Centre in Westminster. The most vulnerable of our society can go there for help. The Centre trains people, finds them work and puts their lives back on track. We wrapped presents, taught English and played with children less fortunate than ourselves. It was great! Talking and listening really helped. The money raised on our Christmas dress-up day will go to the Centre.

Dulwich prep 2In February 2013, another group of Dulwich Prep students came to help out.  Zac, James, Theo, Joshua, William, Josiah, Jesse, Felix and Ubaid were fantastic.  They rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in with our ESOL department.  In our family centre, they came across some dressing up clothes and put on an impromptu musical show for the children.

It was absolutely brilliant, and Sue, who works in our family centre, said that it was wonderful for the children to meet such positive role models.  She also said that she’d never heard so much laughter.

We’d like to thank Dulwich Prep for being so generous with their time.
