It’s all fun and lots of games in the hostel – pictures

Excited residents and curious staff gathered on the fourth floor of the Cardinal Hume Centre yesterday as the greatly anticipated, new and improved games room was given a grand reopening.

The freshly decorated and refurbished room is the end result of lots of hard work by hostel staff, a team of volunteers and also hostel residents. With a brand new pool table, table football, air hockey and an Xbox 360, it is hoped that the room will provide an excellent communal space for the young people living in the Centre’s hostel to unwind and socialise.

After a brief speech from Centre CEO, Cathy Corcoran, two young residents stepped forward to cut the ribbon and let the fun begin.

With plenty of food provided by local popular lunch spots Ecco and Keen, residents continued to drop into play throughout the afternoon.

Hostel key worker, Giuseppe Mallardo, was credited with being the driving force behind getting the room functional again, after nearly a year of it going unused, but he was keen to make sure everyone got recognition.

“It was a real team effort by everyone in the hostel” said Giuseppe. “We really hope the residents get a lot of enjoyment out of it. The key and all the equipment will be signed out each time it used, which will make it sure it’s all well looked after.”

The room was decorated by a team of fast working volunteers from Grosvenor Estates, after a colour was decided on by a forum of hostel residents. Sitting on the forum was volunteer hostel worker, Nadeisha, who was actually a resident in the hostel 18 years ago and has recently returned to give back to the Centre that helped her so much.

Nadiesha said: “It was really important to the residents to make sure the place was inviting to everyone, so not just a boys room. They chose a nice gender neutral colour and requested a pool table, which I think is a great uni sex game. We also plan to get in some computer games that can be enjoyed by everyone.”
