Vatican priest to sleep out overnight at Lord’s

On Monday, 12 September, a cricket-mad priest from the Vatican got the chance to kiss the holy ground at Lord’s where he’ll be sleeping out overnight to support people facing homelessness. Fr Anthony Currer, part of Vatican XI – the Vatican’s own cricket Club, is in the UK on tour with the team from 11-20 September.

Vatican XI with Cathy Corcoran, CEO of the Cardinal Hume Centre

Fr Currer from Hexham and Newcastle Diocese is currently working at the Vatican in the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity. On Monday, 31 October he’ll give up his bed in Rome for a sleeping bag at Lord’s to help raise awareness of the issue, as well as contributing to hopefully raising over £200,000, for people facing homelessness. Commenting on getting the chance to be at Lord’s, he says,

“I’ve always said that if you get in on a pitch like that you’d book in in for bed and breakfast – so here I am. To do this on the pitch at the Home of Cricket for those who have no home is a small way I can support them.  It also gives me the chance to acknowledge the great work of the Cardinal Hume Centre for whom I will be raising money.”

Cathy Corcoran, CEO of the Centre which is based in London and was founded thirty years ago by the Cardinal, said: “I am looking forward to my third CEO Sleepout. I am really impressed at the dedication of our supporters in giving up a night’s sleep in the comfort of their own home. It does not, of course, compare to the real thing but it is still not easy and hopefully it draws attention to the scandal of homelessness.”

All the money raise by the London CEO Sleepout will be supporting the Cardinal Hume Centre, Depaul UK, Church Urban Fund, YMCA North London, MCC and CEO Sleepout UK.
