What is Gift Aid?

Charities take your donation (which is money you’ve already paid tax on), and then reclaim tax on its ‘gross’ equivalent.

In practice, this means that if you give £10 to charity using Gift Aid, that gift is worth £12.50, at no extra cost to yourself. However,  if you pay less Income Tax and / or Capital Gains Tax in the current tax year than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all your donations it will be your responsibility to pay the difference.

Cardinal Hume Centre will treat all donations that you have made for the past four years and all donations you make in the future as Gift Aid donations, until you tell us otherwise.

Who can use Gift Aid?

You can Gift Aid your donations if you are currently a UK taxpayer, as long as you pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April one year to 5 April the next) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all charities and community amateur sports clubs you donate to will reclaim. Council tax and VAT do not count.

Benefits to higher-rate taxpayers

If you pay tax at the higher rate, you can reclaim tax relief on your gross donation at 20% (i.e. the difference between the higher rate of tax at 40% and the basic rate at 20%).

Non taxpayers

If you do not pay tax, you should not use Gift Aid.
