Volunteering Week: John's Story

June 1, 2022

National Volunteers’ Week
1 –7th June is National Volunteers’ Week when organisations across the UK will be celebrating and thanking their volunteers. At the Centre, we benefit hugely from our wonderful team of volunteers, who not only expand the capacity of our team to reach and help more families and young people, but enrich the Centre with their support and enthusiasm for helping local people escape the risk of homelessness.
Homework club volunteer John spoke to us about his volunteering:
Tell us about your volunteering

I volunteer at the Friday Homework club. There are quite a few of us volunteers and we support a group of around12 mostly primary school pupils. Our support is by way of 1:1 tutoring. We help the children with whatever homework they’ve been set by their schools. The homework is usually Math and English though sometimes we get the lap-tops out to help the children do some research for a school project. The children are hard working. They want to learn and also they want to get all their home work finished before the week end!

What difference do you feel you make?

Over the course of a year we watch the children improve academically and, even more rewarding, we watch them grow in confidence.

What do you like about volunteering at the Cardinal Hume Centre?

The Cardinal Hume Homework Club has a lovely atmosphere - it is friendly and supportive and the children really value the 1:1 aspect of our help.

Thank you from all of us at the Centre!
