Volunteering Week: Pedro's Story

June 3, 2022

National Volunteers’ Week
1 –7th June is National Volunteers’ Week when organisations across the UK will be celebrating and thanking their volunteers. At the Centre, we benefit hugely from our wonderful team of volunteers, who not only expand the capacity of our team to reach and help more families and young people, but enrich the Centre with their support and enthusiasm for helping local people escape the risk of homelessness.

Family Service's volunteer Pedro spoke to us about his volunteering:

Tell us about your volunteering

My role is to help coordinate afterschool playtime activities, particularly those set in the outdoor playground. I think of myself as Chief Playtime Officer!

I encourage children to play outdoors (weather allowing) and have fun away from digital devices. Often, we organise activities around their favourite sports, namely football and dodgeball, although sometimes we play new games imagined on the spot. More often than not, I participate in the activities myself to ensure that playtime remains structured, safe and fun for all.

What do you get out of your volunteering?

Volunteering allows me to get to know the local community and become an active participant in it.

What do you like about volunteering at the Cardinal Hume Centre?

The Cardinal Hume Centre has a fantastic family services team and superb group of volunteers, who've made me feel very welcome and at home. All together, we are like one big family!

Thank you from all of us at the Centre!
