Brendan Hemming first heard about our work when someone from the Cardinal Hume Centre spoke at his church around eight years ago. A couple of weeks later, he came to visit for himself – the beginning of a connection that has lasted ever since.

Brendan was inspired by the Centre’s Big 4,000 Challenge – representing the distance many refugees travel in search of safety – and he decided to take on those miles himself.

Already in his seventies, Brendan set out to walk 4,000 miles around the coastlines of England and Wales, raising money for the Centre as he went.

It became a huge physical and personal challenge. Brendan encountered poor weather, injuries and difficult terrain but also the kindness of wonderful people along the journey.
